R 1,600
Cultural Significance
- Fertility and Protection: These dolls are traditionally given to young Namji girls to play with and care for as "babies" to ensure their future fertility and ease of childbirth.
- The "Child": Girls often name the dolls, feed them, and carry them on their backs in the same way mothers carry infants.
- Materials: They are typically hand-carved from wood and decorated with multi-colored glass trade beads, cowrie shells, metal rings, and sometimes leather or fiber "skirts".
- Geometric Head: A characteristically small, rounded or pointed head with minimal facial features.
- Beaded Torso: The body is wrapped in thick layers of dark beads, which is a hallmark of Namji craftsmanship.
- Horn/Amulet Accessory: The large curved horn or tusk attached to the chest serves as a talisman or charm.
- Fiber Skirt: The lower portion features a thick raffia or grass skirt, common in many West African ceremonial figures
